Toxic Tampons and the Growth of the Sustainable Period Care Market
A study published this summer in Environment International reveals that many popular tampon brands are contaminated with heavy metals like lead and arsenic. Organic tampons were also found to be laced with metals.
In addition to health concerns, the sustainability of menstrual products is under scrutiny. Every month, around 1.8 billion people globally menstruate. Single-use period products create more than 200,000 metric tons of waste annually. On an individual level, the average woman will dispose of more than 400 pounds of period products during her lifetime.
In this issue, we examine the growing health and environmental concerns associated with period care, provide insights about how the market is taking shape and provide a landscape report highlighting 20 global innovators leading the charge for sustainable period care.
